So Long 2013

I know I'm not alone in saying this but I for one am glad to see the back of 2013. We had our ups as well as our downs, but it was not a healthy relationship and I'm relieved to be breaking it off.

In light of this statement, it seems unnecessary to look back over the last 12 months and review the highlights, as shared this time last year in my 2012 review. It would be more apt to simply move on...onwards and upwards!

New Year, as well as being a time to set goals and resolutions, is a great time to take a step back, reflect and take time to think about the direction life is taking you in. Over the last couple of weeks, Martin and I have been doing some serious thinking and making the most of a few days off work together to talk about the future.

A walk around the city on New Year's Eve, a trip over the Lyttelton for a quiet drink, a day trip to Victorian Oamaru: all perfect opportunities to gain perspective.

Sometimes it is easy to forget that you have control in your life. If something makes you unhappy, change it. The way we react to and deal with difficult situations is what defines us. Mistakes, misfortune and misadventure can make us stronger.

This year I've lost beloved companions, struggled with self trust, misplaced my sense of direction and lost faith in people. However next year, I will be better equipped to deal with loss, mistrust and new people and places. It all boils down to how you choose to look on things.
